The Terranostra Living Lab is a community-based innovation environment built around a cooperative supermarket in Palma de Mallorca, where consumers, producers, and local stakeholders collaborate to transform the way food is sourced, distributed, and consumed. Established in 2020, the cooperative now brings together nearly 700 members, many of whom actively contribute to its daily functioning through volunteer work and participation in thematic committees. This high level of engagement makes Terranostra not only a retail space, but also a participatory platform for experimentation and co-creation.
Terranostra promotes a model of food consumption grounded in food sovereignty, sustainability, and social responsibility. The cooperative prioritises local organic products, working closely with small-scale farmers and processors. Transparent pricing practices – where producers set their own prices – ensure fair conditions across the value chain. At the same time, the initiative raises awareness among consumers through events, educational activities, and direct interaction with producers, fostering a deeper understanding of sustainable and ethical food systems.
Operating in an island context, Terranostra faces structural challenges such as dependency on imports, logistical constraints, and limited local production capacity. However, these same conditions drive innovation and reinforce the cooperative’s commitment to strengthening short supply chains, local resilience, and low-impact consumption practices.
