Økologisk Samsø is a Living Lab on the Danish island of Samsø, working to build a stronger local organic food system and a socially sustainable rural community. Established between 2013 and 2016, it combines an association, a foundation and a shareholding company that purchases agricultural land, keeps it under organic management and ensures it remains community-owned. By offering affordable long-term leases, the initiative makes farmland more accessible to young farming families and supports them in developing viable organic businesses.
The initiative grew from a shared concern among a local dairy farmer, a conscious consumer and an experienced organic farmer and rural development advocate, who all saw how limited organic food options were on the island. Today, supported by 240 value-driven shareholders, Økologisk Samsø owns four farms covering 60 hectares and leased to organic farmers. The project supports different activities, from community-supported agriculture and farm shops to agritourism and local food supply.
Despite Samsø’s strong green identity and international reputation for renewable energy, organic farming still represents only 6–7% of its agricultural land. The island also faces an ageing farming population and a gap between local production and local demand. During the busy summer season, restaurants serve large numbers of visitors, yet much of their food comes from the mainland while locally grown produce is exported.
Økologisk Samsø aims to close these gaps by connecting land, farmers, local businesses and the wider community. Through stronger support for farmers, closer local food connections and community activities, the Living Lab is creating better conditions for organic farming to grow while contributing to the long-term vitality of rural life on Samsø.
