Kooperatywa Dobrze

The Heart of the Neighborhood: Nourishing Community from the Roots Up

In the bustling center of Warsaw, a quiet revolution is taking place on the shelves of two local grocery stores. What began in 2013 as an informal group of citizens concerned about where their food came from has blossomed into Poland’s largest food cooperative: Kooperatywa Dobrze. Operating through a unique dual structure – combining an educational association and an active consumer cooperative – this self-managed project proves that an alternative, community-driven economy is possible. Here, democracy is at the core of everything; strategic choices are made at General Assemblies where every single member holds exactly one vote, regardless of how many financial shares they own.

The true heartbeat of Dobrze is driven by its 350-plus members. Every month, these member-owners volunteer three hours of their time to stock shelves, handle logistics, and keep the storefronts running smoothly. In return, they receive a 20 percent discount on seasonal, organic food. However, Dobrze is not an exclusive club; its doors are wide open to the public, with non-members making up about 60% of the daily foot traffic. The stores serve as a vital urban bridge, connecting Warsaw residents directly with 20 traditional organic farmers and 30 small-scale processors from the surrounding Mazovian countryside. By radically shortening the supply chain, Dobrze ensures urban families get high-quality food at fair prices while securing a dignified, reliable livelihood for small family farms. In a landscape dominated by industrial supermarket chains, Dobrze turns grocery shopping into an act of neighborhood solidarity and ecological care.

Expanding Horizons: Organic Food for Institutional Canteens and Gastronomy

B2K (Dobrze Goes Kitchen) aims to bring local organic produce directly into professional and institutional kitchens across Warsaw, starting with private schools and kindergartens. The initiative combines efficient supply logistics with menu support, cost optimization, educational workshops and activities that promote healthy eating, sustainability and the value of local organic farming.
